Does the number of friends you have on a social network (such as Twitter in this example) have an effect on how 'cool' you are? Is 'how cool you are' related to 'how cool you think you are'?

A typical reaction to my recent growth in Twitter friends is that I am trying to be 'cool' by having a lot of friends. This is something that comes up on any social network, most commonly on Myspace, and it got me to consider the relationship between how 'cool' undiscriminating friend-adders may feel, and how 'cool' they actually are.



It turns out that there is a serious discrepancy between the two. It is also apparent that my Twitter experiment may end up having a negative impact on my 'actual coolness'.
