AutoSmile: Adding Emotion to Flickr
AutoSmile is a Greasemonkey user script that translates standard text emoticons (e.g. ":-)" and ":D") into 16x16 emoticon images. Flickr supports basic HTML in comments, but users are not willing to type out <img> tags every time they want to smile. With AutoSmile, users can type emoticons normally and the comment will automatically display images instead. There is no extra thought or effort for the user once the script is in place. For your convenience, AutoSmile provides a "Live Preview" feature so you can see what your text is being translated into on the fly!
Instructions & Requirements
You must be using the Firefox web browser to install AutoSmile. You must also have the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox installed.
Once you have Firefox and Greasemonkey installed, simply click here to install the user script.
Usage
In a Flickr photo's comment box, try typing one of the following emoticons:
(Note: Click the "Enable Live Preview" button to watch your progress)
| :-) | =-) | :-| | =-| | 8-D | |||||
| :-P | =-P | :-) | =-) | B-) | |||||
| :-] | =-] | :-( | =-( | ;-) | |||||
| :-o | =-o | :-O | =-O | >:-( | |||||
| :-S | =-S | :-* | =-* | >=-( | |||||
The nose (dash/"-") is optional in all cases.
Upcoming Features
The current version of AutoSmile has an automatic update notification system. When I release a new version of this tool with new features, users will see a link appear on Flickr to come back here and download the latest and greatest.
Configurable Settings. Soon, there will be a settings interface for AutoSmile where users can change anything and everything about the tool. The settings will either appear through a link on Flickr, or I will set up a page on my site where the tool can be reconfigured. The settings I plan on making editable include the default state of the live preview (enabled or disabled), optionally disable AutoSmile when the live preview box is disabled, select which smileys are active, and choose your own key combinations for your smileys.
Custom Smileys. I'm thinking about setting up a page on my site where users can modify my emoticons or create their own through an easy-to-use web interface. Users would be able to make their own expressions, change the colors, or anything their hearts desire. I would save the new emoticons on my server and only their creators would be able to use them through AutoSmile.
